LUMINOUS HILLS VINEYARD

Luminous Hills Vineyard rests along the southwestern peninsula of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA (American Viticultural Area). Nestled among the heights of the Coastal Range foothills, Luminous Hills stretches itself from 700 feet at its base, to nearly 850 feet in elevation- perfect conditions for extended ripening, which continues to allow more complex flavors to develop late in the growing season. The steep slopes make for great drainage and sun exposure. Luminous spands from southeastern facing slopes, and curves its ridged orientation to face the southwest. The difference in orientation changes berry ripening throughout the growing season, as the eastern side receives the less intense morning sun, and stays shaded in the afternoon- creating more finesse driven wines; while the western slopes receive afternoon heat to create bolder, more power-driven wines. Jory volcanic topsoils can be found on the three Northern blocks: Chopping, Stumbling & Building; driving more red fruit notes. While Willakenzie sedimentary topsoil is found on the remaining three blocks, leaning to more earthy & black fruit notes.

Our 2016 Pinot Noir is sourced from the high elevations of Luminous Hills Vineyard. It includes three different clones from three different blocks, grown on both volcanic and sedimentary soils. These individual factors work together to create a delicate bodied Pinot with layered complexity. On the southwestern slopes of the Fiddle Block, the Pommard clone on Willakenzie sedimentary soil serves as the foundation, offering a velvety and fleshy mouthfeel with supporting black fruit character. Co-fermented in a Puncheon barrel, the majority of contrasting red fruit notes are found from the volcanic soils of clone 777 located on the Building Block; while the Dijon clone 667, grown on the steepest, eastern facing block of Luminous Hills, the Stumbling Block, and provides underlying baking spices and bountiful acidity, with just a touch of whole cluster fermentation.
